What size rug under a bed?

For a queen bed, a 7 × 10 or 8 × 10 ft rug set crosswise under the lower two-thirds of the bed is the usual pick. A king needs 8 × 10 to 9 × 12, and a twin 6 × 9 to 7 × 10.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]

The rule

The rug should reach 18 to 24 in beyond each side of the bed.[2 · Oct 29, 2026] The Home Depot says at least 24 in, with the rug under the bed's front legs.[3 · Oct 29, 2026] Placing it under the bottom two-thirds of the bed leaves room for nightstands on the bare floor.[1 · Oct 29, 2026]

Rug size by bed size

Our arithmetic uses Sleep Foundation's mattress dimensions.[4 · Oct 29, 2026] Across the bed: mattress width plus 24 in each side. Depth: two-thirds of the mattress length plus 24 in past the foot. Then the smallest standard size that covers both, laid with its long side across the bed, within a 2 in margin.[3 · Oct 29, 2026][1 · Oct 29, 2026][2 · Oct 29, 2026]

Lowe's lists a twin as 39 × 75 in; Sleep Foundation gives 38 × 75 in. With 18 in instead of 24 in per side, a size smaller often works.
